Make Under

I was standing at the traffic lights when a couple of makeup artists stopped next to me. They were airbrushed within an inch of their lives, both ladies had adopted the Kardashian look right down to their heels. I knew they were makeup artists because they were carrying their makeup kits, perfectly polished and clearly unused.
This made me think of the divide between fact and reality and I am generalising here based on my experience.

So here goes-
*No one wears high heels, unless they are fresh out of makeup school. Standing on your feet for +10 hours be it in a department store or backstage is just not practical. You are generally hired for your work, not for your image.
*All male makeup artists are gay...false. Who cares what if they make you look and feel amazing. A small present from you wont be forgotten, but appreciation for their work, means a lot.
*They play with makeup all day. Does a masseur's partner get a free massage every day...no.
*It's a glamorous life. No. "Backstage" can be a toilet, alleyway, car park. You have to be prepared for anything, even a model turning up for a photoshoot with a black eye. True story.
*A makeup artist uses the makeup from the brand that they represent. The flash from a camera can suck all of the colour out of your face and cheaper brands of eyeshadows are sometimes "watered" down in terms of pigment. Mostly, although not always.
*Models are terrible to work with. You would get snappy too if the production crew told you that you were too fat or too thin after not sleeping well the night before due to a 20 hour work day. Yes models do have a good work ethic. Most makeup artists are caught in the middle, absorbing the tension and making magic happen. Not just in their work, but in listening and offering support.

  1. So true! We may have our moments but those glamorous moments are far and few between and, after more than 20 years on my feet most of the day, heels are reserved for very special occasions only!
